Whether it's for that special romantic dinner for you and your lover or given as thoughtful and loving gesture, flowers are seductive. In the early 1900's men would express their sentiments by sending certain flowers that carried specific messages.
Today, both men and women send flowers to each other and there are no hard and fast rules on the variety of flower sent. Yet, if you wish to revive this old fashioned tradition, here's a guide to the meaning attached to certain flowers. In addition, I have included an explanation of the meaning of the various colors of roses as well as old-fashioned, flowery love story for your enjoyment.

Antique roses, particularly the European classes, are the Gallicas and Damasks. The Pompon des Princes is certainly one of the most beautiful. When in bloom, the bush looks like a fountain of pink and it contains a good amount of the Damask scent, probably the finest perfume in the rose world. The Gallica has been written about in poetry and is called a "noble flower ... in color rich and opulent of leaves." It's appeal is not only its gorgeous display with nearly thornless canes but its petals are so unique, almost forming a heart shape. A third rose that we have a special interest is a Bourborn rose variety called Madame Isacc Pereire named after the wife of a French banker. It's a fat, cabbagey flower with perhaps the strongest deep rose perfume. It's described as luscious and sumptuous, a spectacular rose! Sugarplums shops the Antique Rose Emporium for the most spectacular selection of old roses.

For a special occasion, order the rose named Valentine! It's a velvety deep rich scarlet semi-double flower that has gorgeous long, pointy buds. The bush is slightly open, but the foliage is full and rich. A beautiful rose to give to your special lover.

Cut roses are a treasured gift from the heart but why not start a new tradition. Give him or her a potted or bare-root rose bush. It's a gift that will deliver flowers for many Valentine's Days to come ... you'll forever stay in your lover's thoughts.

COLORS OF ROSES Have you ever been puzzled over which color of rose to give to your lover? Red is traditional for Valentine's Day but here's the meaning behind the colors:

White means innocence and pure spiritual love
Pink means friendship
Yellow means respect
Red means passionate, carnal love

By the way, rosebuds mean young love!

The rose must go back to the flower garden - its true place, not only for its own sake, but to save the garden from ugliness and give it fragrance and beauty of leaf and flower. - William Robinson

When in doubt, send flowers! - Anonymous
